Specialist low-dose radiotherapy service for arthritis and persistent musculoskeletal pain
Pinpoint Radiotherapy Arthritis and Pain Clinic is a Melbourne-based service providing low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) for selected benign musculoskeletal conditions, particularly osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is more than simple “wear and tear.” It involves complex changes in joint structures, local inflammatory processes and pain signalling pathways. While exercise programmes, weight management and allied health interventions remain foundational, some patients continue to experience persistent pain that limits mobility and function.
Our role is to assess whether low-dose radiotherapy may be considered within that broader treatment journey.

Our priority is your well-being every step of the way
Pinpoint Radiotherapy Arthritis and Pain Clinic is a specialist service delivered within established Melbourne ICON Radiotherapy Centres.
Dr Paul Conway serves as Clinical Lead of the low-dose radiotherapy service. Clinical governance is provided by radiation oncologists, supported by a multidisciplinary team of radiation therapists, medical physicists and specialist nursing staff.
All care is delivered within accredited radiotherapy facilities using structured planning systems, standardised protocols and established quality assurance processes.
Radiation Oncologist | Pinpoint Pain Clinical Lead
Dr Paul Conway leads the low-dose radiotherapy service. He is a specialist radiation oncologist with additional postgraduate training in musculoskeletal management and focused education in low-dose radiotherapy techniques.
Dr Conway has completed postgraduate studies in musculoskeletal management through the University of Otago, with focus on assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions, including joint pathology, biomechanics, pain mechanisms and evidence-based clinical decision-making.
He has also undertaken structured education through the Radiotherapy Academy for Benign Conditions (RT-ABC), an international programme dedicated to the clinical use of radiotherapy in non-malignant conditions. The curriculum addresses patient selection, dose schedules, treatment planning considerations and review of the evidence base for low-dose radiotherapy.
This combined training supports a careful, structured approach to integrating low-dose radiotherapy within established musculoskeletal care pathways.
TREATMENT
Delivered with Care
We recognise that patients referred for LDRT have often already invested considerable time and effort in conservative treatment.
Our assessment therefore focuses on:
• Confirming diagnosis and reviewing imaging
• Understanding the functional impact of pain
• Reviewing prior management strategies
• Explaining evidence and where uncertainty remains
• Discussing potential benefits and risks of treatment
• Considering reasonable alternatives, including not proceeding
Clear written communication is provided to the GP and other treating clinicians so that care remains coordinated.
The aim is informed, shared decision-making within the context of each patient’s broader care plan.
